Whispered
‘Whispered’ refers to people who possess knowledge concerning scientific theories and technology that far surpass what is currently known. The numberous advanced technologies, the least of which are the humanoid weaponry are called Arm Slaves and ultra-large submarines, were all obtained through the Whispered. They are a treasure trove of Black Technology, non-existant technology. There are perhaps several dozen people in the world with the latent gift of a Whispered. Of those, it is said that only a few can actually draw upon that knowledge like Tessa and Kaname.
Based on analysis according to Miller’s statistical method, the Whispered are thought to be born when several conditions coincide. They are born as normal children, but as time passes and they grow older they begin to hear ‘whispers’ once they become psychologically mature and their knowledge and vocabulary expand. After all, Whispered is taken from ‘those who have been whispered to.” With the onset of the ‘whispers’ they become increasingly intelligent. In time, they reach a point where they might be called ‘geniuses’ and the ‘whispers’ begin to relate more to advanced knowledge - material they could not have possibly known. However, each Whispered has an area of expertise. Just how much latent Whispered ability Kaname has is unknown but based on examples from the incident in the autonomous dictatorship of Khanka it seems she can access the Black Technology related to the Lambda Driver and AS. Tessa, who is Mithril’s sole Whispered, has no knowledge related to the Lambda Driver, which has made analyzing the Arbalest difficult.
Various organizations after the Whispered candidates have reportedly used drugs akin to cannabinoids to draw out the latent wisdom. Cannibinoids are an active metabolite drawn from the hemp plant, the tetrahydrocannabinol component reduces intraocular pressure while affecting brain activity on the physiological scale but psychologically the patient is placed in a euphoric state for three to five hours after application. While the individual’s judgement, coordination and short-term memory are affected the dreamlike aura relaxes time and the patient into an intimate awareness of their senses.
The ‘whispers’ arise from deep within the psyche. It has not been elucidated how that place - the utmost depths called the ’sphere’ - is structured. The Whispered merely draw the phrases and information that float in that ’sphere’ to the surface. And there is danger that accompanies attempts to deliberately draw knowledge fromt hat ’sphere.’ There have supposedly been some whose sense of self was destroyed because they carelessly probed the depths of their psyche and the ’sphere’ encroached upon who they were. They must have been rendered incapable of maintaining their self and thoughts as a person. As another perculiarity, there is a danger that the ’sphere’ will induce a phenomenon called ‘resonance.’ During the battle against the Behemoth and during the highjacking at sea Tessa employed resonance on Kaname. Resonance is the sharing of thought through the ’sphere’ which arises when several conditions are met - when Whispereds feel that they need one another. At these times their thoughts become as one. On the other hand, the sharing of psyches through resonance comes with the risk of their two selves merging and becoming one. If their thoughts become mingled and they can no longer maintain their own selves, they become indivisible at that point. When Tessa only uses resonance it is only as a last resort.
Just as the appearance of the AS in the mid-80s completely altered the nature of the battlefield, Black Technology presents the constant latent threat of changing the world. As the source of such, the Whispered is deserving of our sympathy. The minds of the Whispered continue to be targeted by the world’s agencies and organizations who want the Black Technology. The reason the understaffed Mithril continues to monitor Kaname Chidori is precisely because she has the ability to possibly change the world.
