Complete Script, S01 Episode 6
(several student voices speaking indistinctly)
Kyoko: Ah man, you think Kaname’s ok?
Miss Kagurazaka: They told me she got on board another plane.
Kyoko: Oh, Kazama, don’t cry. I know you’re worried about Sousuke but I’m sure that he’ll be ok.
Shinji: [crying] No. I-I’m just so happy I got to see a real M9 in battle. I could get hit by a stray bullet right now and I wouldn’t care!

Melissa: [sigh] Huh?
Teiwaz pilot: Looks like the party’s over. We’ve got another enemy battalion closing in.
Melissa: Wait! What about Urzu 6? Kurz hasn’t contacted me yet. Neither has Sousuke nor the girl.
Teiwaz 12: This is Teiwaz twelve. Out by the north river we have found the wreckage of an M9. We think it’s Uruz six’s.
Melissa: Can you repeat that? Is the operator safe!?
Teiwaz 12: Can not confirm. Too much smoke.
Melissa: Find him! And Sousuke!
Teiwaz 12: I wish we could ma’am but we don’t have the time to look for either of them at this point.
Melissa: Just give me a minute! I’ll do a-
Kalinin: The search is prohibited!
Melissa: [startle]
Kalinin: Withdrawl immediately.
Melissa: But sir!
Kalinin: Their reinforcements have just crossed the bridge. Our interceptors are on their way. You have one minute to get out of there. Teiwaz twelve, shoot all the munitions you have left into the M9’s wreckage. Don’t let them have one shard of one screw.
Teiwaz 12: Teiwaz twelve, roger.
Melissa: NO DON’T!
Kalinin: Uruz 2, leave the area and dock with the transport helicopter. Do you copy?
Melissa: [hesitate] Uruz two, roger.

(M9 explosion)
Gauron: Hm, absolutely useless. Stops working after I use it once. [view helicopter] Kalinin. Is he here as well? [answer beep] Who is it?
Agent: It’s me. I got a strange report from a firefighter.
Gauron: So spill.
Agent: He saying that he saw two people near the westside fence not too long ago. A man and a young woman. Both of them ran away and disappeared.
Gauron: Kashim. Hm.
(short distance from westside fence)
Kaname: Are you really alright, Sousuke?
Sousuke: We’re not safe yet. But we didn’t have any other option. We had to leave base.
Kaname: That’s not what I meant. Huh? Raindrops. We… should take a little break.
Sousuke: [breath heavily] Fine.
Kaname: Hey, what’s wrong with you?
Sousuke: [truncate words] You’l-you’ll find there’s a little case inside the pocket on my jacket. Find it.
Kaname: [search] This it? Huh? Who are these people?
Sousuke: They were my fellow soldiers.
Kaname: They were…
Sousuke: [gasp while dressing wound]
Kaname: [gasp] Oh, Sousuke! You’re hurt!
Sousuke: Yes, but I’m lucky. No damage to vital organs or arteries. So it should in no way affect how I carry out my duty.
Kaname: You’re… duty?
Sousuke: We better move. They’re getting closer.
Kaname: [stare]
Sousuke: What’s wrong?
Kaname: [stare]
Sousuke: We should go, we have people after us-
Kaname: Stay away!
Sousuke: What? Are you scared of me?
Kaname: [startle]
Sousuke: [emotional pain] It’s a natural feeling. You- must think I look like- well… The important thing is all I can think of now is finding a way to send you back home safe and sound. I can’t guaruntee that we’ll escape… but can you trust me Kaname?
Kaname: [advance]
Sousuke: Get back!
Kaname: [gasp]
(exchange of drawing guns)
Sousuke: Oh, it’s just you.
Kurz: Yeah, nice to see ya. [pass out]

(de Danaan)
Kalinin: Sergeant Major Mao, you’re supposed to be waiting in the hanger.
Melissa: Please sir, two hours. No, give me just one hour! I’ll be back in time with Kurz and Sousuke!
Kalinin: You want me to risk a five million dollar submarine and its two hundred and fifty passengers?
Melissa: They’re my men Lieutinent Commander. That makes them my responsibility!
Kalinin: It’s raining outside. The ECS invisible mode won’t help you any. There’s no chance of finding them.
Melissa: I know it sounds crazy, but sir! I-
Kalinin: Beyond this door is restricted control center personnel only.
Melissa: You’re always taking the high road. How can you be so damn official about everything!?
Kalinin: Because I am required to be that way.
(door close)
Tessa: You came here to ask me how long we can wait, right? We can not afford another minute right now. The enemy’s armed patrol boats are getting close.
Kalinin: You’re right Madam Captain.
Tessa: But I do want to rescue Sagara and the others.
Kalinin: Yes, there is a remote possibility that Sergeant Weber is still alive.
Tessa: Well, if I can manage to spare a few minutes on the surface, what plan would you suggest we follow?
Kalinin: Can we really do that?
Tessa: It would be impossible if this were a regular submarine.
Kalinin: If my assessment of the enemy is correct, we will have to deploy that thing to keep pace with them.
Tessa: What thing?
Kalinin: ARX seven. Arbalest.

(squeaking wheelbarrow)
Sousuke: Did that silver one beat you?
Kurz: Yeah, but I have no idea what happened… I lured it in close and blasted it with a 57 millimeter. I thought I killed the bastard but I ended up getting blown to pieces.
Sousuke: Is it possible that they detonated a Fougaud underneath you?
Kurz: No, I don’t think that’s what it was. It was like someone hit me with an invisible hammer [groan]
Kaname: Kurz!
Sousuke: That’s enough. Don’t speak anymore.
(distant explosions a short time later)
Sousuke: If we make it across this field, we should be able to reach the sea.
Kaname: Make it across? But if we go walking around in the open, then-
Sousuke: Yes, without any cover they’re likely to find us.
Kaname: So then, uh, what do we do?
Sousuke: Chidori.
Kaname: Yes?
Sousuke: I was thinking about this on the way up here. There’s quite some distance between us and the beach. We can’t make our escape together.
Kaname: So…?
Sousuke: So Kurz and I will stay here and create enough of a disturbance to attract the enemy’s attention. We will try to buy you as much time as we can.
Kaname: What does that- [gasp]
Sousuke: [hold radio out] Take this radio and make a run for the beach. It’s range is somewhat limited but if our allies are in the area they should respond.
Kaname: I have to escape alone?
Sousuke: Don’t worry about it. Our duty and number one priority is to guard your life. It is your right to make it out of this place alive. So go.
(long pause)
Kaname: I’m not going!
Sousuke: [gasp, angrily] Chidori-
Kaname: I don’t want to go! Got it? God, Sousuke, you’re such an idiot! Are you thinking, like, ‘I don’t care when I die’ or some other stupid nonsense? Is that what’s running through that thick head of yours?
Sousuke: Uh-
Kaname: What do you think it makes you cool or something like that?
Sousuke: Uh-
Kaname: Even if you’re ready to die without stopping to think how I would feel, I want you to know that having my life saved by some moody military maniac like you isn’t gonna make me any happier! OK!?
Sousuke: Uh-
Kaname: So are we clear!?
Sousuke: Uh-
Kaname: Well I guess you’re still missing my point. What I’m trying to say is that we should put our heads together and think about ways that we can all survive. You really shouldn’t give up so easily, Sousuke!
Sousuke: I’m sorry but there’s no other way.
Kaname: We should at least give it some thought. I don’t know, what if we started a fire here, let it spread and took advantage of the confusion and ran away! Something. There’s always an answer.
Sousuke: Look, please. I’m the professional here. I considered all the different senarios and chose the best idea out of all the ones I came up with!
Kaname: Don’t you get it? I don’t want to do it and that’s final!
Sousuke: [point gun] Just shut up and GO!
(darkness)
Kaname: If I don’t go, you’ll shoot?
Sousuke: That’s right. It is better for you to die here than to be caught by the enemy and turned into one of the living dead.
Kaname: Hm. Look Sousuke, you said.. to trust you so I’m taking you at your word. I thought I could bear anything out here… as long as you were with me. Didn’t matter how much I was worn out or how painful it was- even if I thought I was gonna die. I thought… I could handle it. So please don’t say you’re gonna go and get killed… We should go back together… Sousuke…
Sousuke: [drop gun] Kaname.
Kaname: Sousuke.
(time passes as they look into each others eyes)
Kurz: [cough]
Kaname: [startle] Huh!?
Sousuke: Kurz! Where you awake this whole time?
Kurz: [weak laugh] Face it Sousuke, you just lost a battle. The girl said she doesn’t like your plan, your idea is officially rejected.
Sousuke: But I-
Kurz: Now I’m gonna hafta vote in favor of Kaname’s plan. Starting a wildfire is a good idea. And what a stroke of luck, it stopped raining.
Kaname: Hm-hm.
Sousuke: Stupid! It would give away our position! It’s too risky!
Kaname: But if there are friendly airplanes flying around then they could see it from the sky. And then they could make a quick landing and pick us up!
Sousuke: We’re under enemy airspace so it’ll never happen!
Kurz: Wait a minute!
Kaname: Huh?
Kurz: From the sky… o-two-hundred-fourty-eigh-hours…
Sousuke: So what?
Kurz: Before I left for the attack I was shown a satellite photo. A photo of the base. The time was… uh.. uh uh… yesterday at fifteen hundred thirty hours.
Sousuke: A spy satellite!
Kurz: Kaname, babe, you’re the greatest!
Kaname: Uhm, what’s going on?
Sousuke: Our spy satellites go through the same place in their orbit above the earth every twelve hours.
Kurz: Which means in about fourty minutes it should be making its way around here again!
Sousuke: Well, as long as this cloud cover hangs around it’ll be difficult, if not impossible, for the satellite to spot us or the fire. Make no mistake, we’re looking at a long shot. But still…
Kurz: It’s worth it taking the risk, don’t you think so?
Sousuke: That’s affirmative.
Kaname: Where are you going?
Sousuke: I have to go and find some oil. Lighter fluid would only help us start a small campfire.
Kurz: Ok! But don’t do anything dumb! Might as well, we’ll probably screw up sooner or later.
Kaname: You’re going alone?
Sousuke: Yes. You stay here.
Kaname: Sousuke! Please promise me, that you’ll most definitely come back.
Sousuke: Yes ma’am, I promise I’ll be back.

Kaname: So, you don’t know either.
Kurz: That’s right. Our Commander ordered us to keep a close watch on you; protect you from danger. We were just carrying out the orders we were given. What we weren’t given was any information on why you were targeted.
Kaname: Right.
(flashback to the farmhouse Sousuke’s at)
Kurz: What did they do to you in there?
Kaname: I wish I could tell you. They made me drink a glass of something they said was a vitamin drink and then I had to watch this weird video that I couldn’t understand.
Kurz: Video?
Kaname: All sorts of letters kept changing one after the other. Base material of the invertable disk damper, reaction catalyst for the paladium reactor. ECS invisible mode wasn’t ready for widespread deployment. The laser screen oscillation system was bearing way too many loads. Smelled like ozone t…
Kurz: Wait a second, how the hell do you know all these words!?
Kaname: Huh? What words? Did I s-say something just now?
Kurz: Military personel are the only people on the planet that should know the names of AS parts or the weak point of the ECS.
Kaname: You- you say that, but I-
Kurz: Where in the world did you learn this stuff?
Kaname: I don’t know! I’m not supposed to know these words…
(whispers)
Kaname: … but somehow I just do. Since before I was born, they told me. I- remember they called it Black Technology or something like that.
Kurz: [light studder]
Kaname: [screams]
Kurz: U-uh, Kaname!
(whispers continue, flashback to Sousuke)
Kaname: [breath heavy]
Kurz: Are you ok?
Kaname: What did I just do? I’m, like, some unstable goofball… hehehe.
Kurz: Listen, Kaname, let’s just not think about it anymore. Ok? We can forget about it, for now.
(flash to Sousuke lighting fire)
Kaname: Are you alright? Does it hurt?
Kurz: I’m a lot of help. I can’t move a damn muscle now that you really need me to! What a loser.
Kaname: That’s not true, you’ve already done so much for me!
Kurz: Shit. If only I had a little bit more energy left.
Kaname: Save your strength.
Kurz: If I… could just…
Kaname: Huh!
(flashback to fire)
Kaname: Did you have any luck?
Sousuke: I don’t know. I hope our allies noticed the sign. But like I said, it was a long shot- huh? Kurz! What happened!? Are you ok?
Kaname: Oh I think he’ll be fine. He’s resting his eyes after wandering all night.
Sousuke: So what happened to him?
(later)
Kaname: Hey.
Sousuke: Hm.
Kaname: If we- if we make it back home safely, what do you think you’ll do when we get there?
Sousuke: Most likely start on my next mission.
Kaname: Are you saying you’ll go somewhere else? You’re not coming to school anymore.
Sousuke: I suppose not. Being a school student gets in the way of a soldier’s duty. Especially if his duty is elsewhere. I’ll simply disappear. Just as my training dictates.
Kaname: I see.
Sousuke: [grab Kaname] Huh.
Kaname: What!?
Sousuke: They’ve found us!
Kurz: They followed you.
Sousuke: It was only a matter of time.
Kurz: It’s all over now.
Sousuke: I think you’re right.
Kaname: You know, I once saw a movie like this a long time ago. Two guys like you, a gloomy guy and a flirt, run away from the West Coast of the States to a place in South America. In the end they get surrounded by a whole bunch of enemies.
Kurz: Yeah, I think I’ve seen that movie.
Kaname: Huh?
Kurz: I seem to remember the pretty haired one was very nice to flirt, too. That’s the one, right?
Kaname: Hm.
Sousuke: Then what?
Kaname: What what?
Sousuke: What happens to these two guys at the end?
Kaname: Uhm, I don’t know. They go out to face the enemy with their guns blazing… then, that’s it.
Sousuke: Is that so?
Kaname: In old black and white movies, it used to be that the main characters would die a lot of the time. There ought to be a rule, you know. Cause movies should have… a happy ending.
(startled birds flutter up)
Kaname: Huh, oh.
Kurz: Nn.
Kaname: [gasp]
(continuous gunfire errupts)
Kaname: I see. I guess this is the real thing, huh?
Sousuke: Guess so.
Kurz: What do you say we do that cool ending scene?
Kaname: Sure, we’ll make it a touching celluloid moment.
Sousuke: Chidori.
Kaname: Huh?
Sousuke: I’m sorry, but, we won’t be going back together.
Kaname: I don’t have any regrets. I’m glad I met you, Sousuke Sagara.
Kurz: Well, shall we go?
(gunfire)
Sousuke: Hold on!
(mecha deploys in distance)
Kaname: Is that a-
Kurz: M9.
Sousuke: No. It’s not!
Kaname: Wait! Sousuke!
Kurz: So then, who’s in there? Is it Mao!?
(in cockpit)
Al: Initializing voiceprint. Your name and ID number, please.
Sousuke: Sergeant Sousuke Sagara. B, three, one, two, eight.
Al: Voiceprint complete. Sergeant Sagara confirmed. Awaiting command.
Sousuke: Close the hatch. Start the controls at mode four. Bilateral angle 3.5.
Al: Roger.
Kalinin: Sergeant Sousuke Sagara, this tape recording was made to play in the event that you successfully joined up with ARX seven aka Arbalest.
Sousuke: Arbalest?
Kalinin: Currently de Danaan is running at full steam toward shore on a strict radio silence. We plan to follow the shore closely and escape after we pick you up. We will be on the surface for one minute’s duration at o-four-hundred-thirty-hours. Come to the designated point by that time however you can. By the way, the AI’s callsign is Al. Be sure to bring it back since it is a very expensive test machine. That is all, good luck.
Al: Abby, AS. Estimated 5 units approaching.
(view of Arbalest)
Kaname: They’re… coming…
Kurz: Sousuke.
(inside cockpit)
Sousuke: You’re Al, correct?
Al: Yes, Sergeant.
Sousuke: We’ve got just one minute.
Al: Roger.
Sousuke: Let’s go!
(in trench)
Kurz: [gasp]
Kaname: [gasp]
