Issei and Sousuke are heavily involved in one-on-one combat over the trick demolishing of Issei’s prized dojo by order of the Student Counsel. In the middle of the fight, intermittently the two find themselves winding down and around corridors, culminating in bursting out of the building doors and into the courtyard for the final showdown. As Issei’s vision is limited without his troublesome glasses, he punches the first blurred figure with dark features he sees in his signature ‘Fist of Near Death style.’ Thus was the introduction between Mister Oonuki and Issei Tsubaki.
The martial arts move on the aged man resulted in Zenji’s mandatory rest for a week. As the only person fulfilling the janitorial job description, Sousuke and Issei are appointed by the ruling powers of the Student Counsel to do his job. Throughout the trials, Sousuke and Issei learn how drastically their actions have affected their school and Mister Oonuki. As a way of apologizing and truly accounting for their deeds they cook for the lonely old man. Truly working together without a hint of competitive struggle, they prepare a fabulous meal and earn deep respect from the old man.
A short lived respect, for they had cooked a fish they found near the High School grounds. As the mystery unravels, the fish belonged to Zenji. With no one else in his life, he had taken care of that fish almost as if it were his own daughter, naming it Kathyren after a famous actress she was his only companion for 15 long years. The realization that this world he lives in is no longer what it used to be, picking up on the true hints of malice the boy’s must house for him and mourning for his shocked loss causes him to take drastic action. Uncloaking a chainsaw he uses for grounds work from his closet, he chases the two boys with possessed intent to kill.
Fortunately for Sousuke and Issei, their agility allows them to survive the attack and ultimately forces them to work as a team together. However, learning the moral of the story is not enough to paint a happy ending. Jindai High school grounds looks like it has suffered one of Sousuke’s barrages. The two boys mindless chant what they saw in the moonlight as sun filters in through the dust, exhaustion owns them as they lean back against one of the few intact walls.
Mister Oonuki awakens from his slumped position across from them and surveys the scene. Holding his head in his hand he doesn’t appear to remember what happened at all. As he looks down at the two boys, the chainsaw glistens beside him holding the reflection of his possessed self just hours before.—fmp_whispered
