Sousuke Sagara
Sousuke Sagara is a 17-year old (approx.) Sergeant serving the paramilitary counter-terrorist force, Mithril. He is a member of the SRT (Special Response Team) of the Western Pacific Battle Group, “Tuatha de Danaan,” aboard an assault submarine of the same name under the command of Captain Teletha “Tessa” Testarossa. Being an Arm Slave specialist, Sagara operates as team point-man for the SRT; his call sign is Urzu-7 and his ID number is B-3128. Additionally, he is proficient in logistics, demolitions, breach and forced entry, covert intrusion, and hand-to-hand combat. He is fluent in Japanese, English, Russian, Persian, and several Afghan dialects.
With all of the inherit trouble Sousuke seems to find himself at Jindai High, it is easy to overlook that our hero has a very serious past. Born in a war torn country, Sousuke unfortunately learned since birth to defend his life. While he may appear to be a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and a tad over-anxious, these are necessary tactics for survival—and so ill-adapted to High School life in peaceful Japan!
Sagara is portrayed, in the series, as under the foster care of Andrei Kalinin since a very young age in guerilla war territory. The two characters were united through the grim fate of a deadly plane crash in which Sousuke was the only survivor. Kalinin found him within the Boeing 747 wreckage. When any surviving relatives were found unidentified, Sousuke was then taken solely under Kalinin’s care living some time in Fayetteville, California.
Sousuke is of Japanese origin, however, he has traveled extensively and been located in regions deeply entrenched by war. His reading preference centers on war affairs, such as Jane’s Fighting Ships. He is aware of his homeland designation, although ironically, the most troubling subject for him in school is Japanese History (Class 2-4 of Jindai High School, Registration number 41). Afghanistan (known as Helmajistan in the anime) is where he appears to have spent most of his time. His training in Afghanistan led him to become a very skilled pilot, especially in AS (Arm Slave) units. However, now he occupies the ’safe house’ across from Kaname’s apartment, room 505 of his apartment complex.
In the anime, he pilots the ARX-7 Arbalest equipped with AI named Al. In the novels he goes on to pilot the ARX-8 Laevatein upgrade built by Whispered Sarah Miller.—MIZ
