Our fiery young heroine is rarely incapable of keeping up with the extreme circumstances. Born a Whispered in 1984 (1981 in the novels), Kaname Chidori had also lived in America (New York) with her family before crossing the ocean again to her home in Tokyo, Japan where our series takes place. Shortly after the death of her mother, her father and sister return to New York leaving Kaname on her own to finish school in her homeland.

Kaname’s childhood is one of sadness. Numerous police reports detailing Chidori’s attempts of running away from home and ordered house detentions—for damage to school property—fill Izumigawa Police Department records (how quickly she forgets how much she’s like our endeared Sergeant…). This could be attributed to her mother’s declining health, or could be a side effect of coping with Whispered happenings. On the other hand, Kaname’s sports accomplishments as a child speak volumes of her athletic ability – which is clearly prominent in the series. Awards for first and second place in swimming, track and field give insight into her endurance strength.

An extremely bright and active student, Kaname is generally very good natured. So much so that she was practically forced into the role of Class Representative. For her to lash out at and speak so lowly of Sousuke behind his back is very uncharacteristic…

She seldom has difficulty with subject material—when she achieves stellar grades she does so with ease, yet her overall academic performance is very inconsistent. The reasoning behind this, Kaname concludes, is explained in the secrets of the Whispered. The Whispered are individuals born with top-secret knowledge hidden within them capable of launching extremely dangerous weapons. Gauron, one of the series’ antagonists, expresses a deep and steady interest in the young girl’s status several times during the series.

Her wristwatch is very important to her, as it reminds her of her mother as she cared for her in the last days before her death. She rarely trusts anyone and keeps her feelings locked up inside for the most part. The one she does tell things to are her 11 year old sister, Ayame Chidori and fellow classmate, Kyoko Tokiwa. While she shows her softer side in her long distance phone calls with her sister, she has been known to fondly call Kyoko “a brat.” Sadly, she only gets minimal interaction with her family via long-distance phone call. Kyoko stays over at Kaname’s apartment about once a week to keep her company.Miz
